The North Kerry CAMHS Review led by Dr. Colette Halpin has completed its assessment of around 300 patient files, but the report remains unpublished despite being drafted in June 2025. This delay is causing significant distress for affected families, particularly given that 50% of reviewed cases have resulted in apologies from the HSE, compared to just 15% in the South Kerry Maskey Review.
Athlone Man charged with assaulting elderly woman at nursing home
A 54-year-old man has been charged with attacking an elderly woman at Sonas Nursing Home on Ballymahon Road, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. Peter Keaney was required to appear at Athlone District Court this week following the incident that occurred on Monday night.
Mr. Keaney, of Hillside Close, Monksland, Athlone, Co. Roscommon, was accompanied by his assigned solicitor, Mark Cooney. Mr Cooney was successful in securing a psychiatric assessment and report for the accused.
During the hearing, Judge Bernadette Owens inquired about a bail application. Sergeant Paul McNally stated that no bail was requested and sought a one-week custody remand. He also indicated that the Gardai would object to any future bail applications.
Mr. Keaney has not yet decided whether to seek bail. Judge Owens clarified that any bail application would require 48 hours’ notice. The DPP ordered Mr. Keaney to appear at the Court again on 8 May for directions and has been remanded in custody.
