Intimate image abuse: protecting your privacy and dignity

Intimate image abuse is an issue that rings alarmingly true in the now-digital world and is growing in prevalence. The invasive tendencies towards private information will emotionally and psychologically damage a victim severely, who shall, after that, feel violated and exposed. In this respect, Coleman Legal LLP recognises the heavy severity of such abuse and commits itself to providing legal support and advice.

We understand that any form of abuse is extremely distressing for the victim and their family, and we deal with each case on a personal, one-to-one basis with compassion, empathy and understanding. If you have been the victim of sexual assault or sexual abuse, please get in touch with Philip Treacy either by email or freephone us at (0818) 000 596

    What is intimate image abuse?

Intimate image abuse is when a person shares or threatens to share intimate images or videos of another person without their permission. Such abuse can be done with the intent to achieve revenge, control, humiliation, or even financial gain from it. Whichever the reason for the abuse, it is a severe violation of trust and privacy.

These images can then be spread across a multitude of platforms, from social media to websites and direct messaging, causing the victim tremendous distress, often with fear for their safety and potential reputational damage. Some of the abuses include:

    • Sending explicit images without consent
    • Threatening to publish pictures or videos
    • Tampering with images with the intent to degrade or harass the complainant

The trauma can be massive, leading to anxiety, depression, and a loss of control in one’s life.

Legal protections against intimate image abuse

Under Irish law, the Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020 or “Coco’s Law”, provides sound legal protection for people suffering intimate image abuse, criminalising the distribution or threats to distribute intimate images without consent. It can include heavy fines, with imprisonment for those convicted, making it clear that this behaviour will not be tolerated.

Victims of intimate image abuse have the right to seek legal redress and make sure their abusers will be brought to book. Coming out opens the first avenue for victims to reclaim their privacy and dignity.
