A radiographer at Tallaght Hospital was found guilty of professional misconduct

A radiographer dismissed from his position at Tallaght University Hospital following a complaint about his conduct while carrying out an X-ray on a 16-year-old patient in 2023 has been found guilty of professional misconduct.

CORU, the regulatory body of health and social care professionals, held an inquiry into the conduct complained of. It was alleged that Adrian Penconcillo had misbehaved when carrying out an x-ray and later attempted to contact her through social media. The inquiry heard that Mr. Peconcillo failed to provide the patient with a gown before the X-ray, meaning she had to come out of the changing area undressed to the waist. He also then spoke to the teenager while she faced him in a partially undressed state and invited her to view the X-rays.

The teenager’s parents complained to Tallaght Hospital after the incident, which led to his suspension and, ultimately, his dismissal following an internal inquiry. Mr. Penconcillo’s counsel, Matthew Jolley BL, advised the inquiry that Mr. Peconcillo accepted the allegations and was remorseful. The CORU committee stated that as Mr. Peconcillo had not worked in two years, imposing a suspension period would not be recommended. However, conditions attaching to Mr. Penconcillo’s registration would be considered and notified to him.
