Our client was a man in his mid-thirties who worked as a warehouse operator. He was carrying out his usual duties on the factory floor when the accident occurred.
An automatic door in the factory came down at speed and struck our client on the head while he was working. He sustained injuries to his neck and back, along with a minor concussion.
An automatic door that closes at speed can pose a serious risk to workers, and employers are expected to take reasonably practicable measures to protect employees from such hazards.
A settlement of €25,000 was reached in a workplace injury settlement in Ireland on behalf of a warehouse worker who was struck on the head by an automatic door in the factory where he worked. The claim was brought against his employer and was resolved in July 2026.
How the claim was investigated
Norman Spicer brought the claim against the employer.
Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers in Ireland have a duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of their employees. This includes providing a safe workplace, maintaining equipment and implementing safe systems of work.
The central question in this workplace injury claim was whether the employer had met those obligations in relation to the automatic factory door.
An engineer was instructed to examine the door and investigate how the accident occurred. Medical evidence was also obtained from our client’s general practitioner to establish the nature of his injuries and recovery.
Together, this evidence allowed the claim to be presented clearly to the employer.
The outcome
The workplace injury settlement was resolved in July 2026 with a settlement of €25,000 reached without admission of liability.
