An Garda Síochána investigates 1990s sexual abuse allegations by female soccer players against former coaches
It has been confirmed that An Garda Siochana has commenced an investigation on foot of allegations of female soccer players that unwanted sexual advances were made to them by two former senior coaches in the 1990s.
Over two-and-a-half years, the Sunday Independent and RTE Investigates carried out an investigation during which the allegations emerged. Many of the women involved only discovered during the investigations that others had experienced similar unwanted advances from the coaches.
Many explained that they were afraid to speak out previously, but they have now courageously come forward to make football safer for those now playing and those who will play in the future. The Football Association of Ireland
The president of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) wrote to members of the general assembly on the 4th of July 2024 to advise them of the coverage which would follow. He stated:
“I wanted to make you aware of an upcoming media story relating to a series of allegations of historical abuse of women involved in football in the 1990s. You may see the story promoted over the coming days and I wanted to give you the reassurance that the association is treating this matter with the utmost importance and is engaging both with the women involved and the relevant authorities.”
He also stated that “all safeguarding concerns that are brought to the association’s attention are dealt with as a matter of priority.”
On the 28th of June 2024, the association announced introduction of The Play It Right campaign whereby concerns and allegations of inappropriate actions could be reported anonymously to independent complaint handling firm Raiseaconcern. This is due to be rolled out across clubs nationwide.
The FAI have stated that they have been in touch with both Tusla and An Garda Siochana.
An Garda Síochána
