The Scoping Inquiry has revealed close to 2,400 allegations of historical sexual abuse in religious-run schools across Ireland. The report, detailing the abuse inflicted on thousands of children, calls for a full Commission of Investigation and urges the government to consider financial redress for survivors.
Former DUP Leader faces historical sexual offence charges
Jeffrey Donaldson, former DUP leader, has appeared at Newry Magistrates’ Court to respond to charges of historical sexual offences.
The 61-year-old was taken into custody and formally charged at the end of March following accusations of past sexual misconduct.
Additionally, a 58-year-old woman faces charges of aiding and abetting further offences related to the same investigation.
Donaldson was suspended from the DUP pending the result of his trial after he stepped down as leader.
In a communication with party members, he declared his intention to fight all the accusations against him vigorously.
Gavin Robinson, the MP for East Belfast and the deputy leader, has been named acting leader of the party. Despite the charges, Donaldson continues serving as Lagan Valley’s MP.
Donaldson was accompanied by his lawyer on his arrival at the court and remained silent despite the large group of media gathered outside. Police worked to maintain clear access to the court for the politician.
